White House Finds Humor in Hunting Mishap

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House has decided that the best way to deal with Vice President Dick Cheney's shooting accident is to joke about it. President Bush's spokesman quipped Tuesday that the burnt orange school colors of the University of Texas championship football team that was visiting the White House shouldn't be confused for hunter's safety wear.

Hunter Shot by Cheney Has Heart Attack

The 78-year-old lawyer who was shot by Vice President Dick Cheney in a hunting accident has some birdshot lodged in his heart and he had a "minor heart attack," a hospital official said Tuesday. Peter Banko, the hospital administrator at Christus Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Memorial, said Harry Whittington had the heart attack early Tuesday while being evaluated. [Emphasis added.]

The Brad Blog wants to know why it wasn’t mentioned during the daily press briefing.

BobHarris.com Poll Of The Day
How will the White House explain Dick Cheney shooting a guy in the face?
· Washington, Lincoln, and Roosevelt all shot guys in the face, too
· The Patriot Act gives Cheney the legal authority to shoot guys in the face
· The victim's face was harboring Al-Qaeda's #3 man
· If you're innocent, you shouldn't mind a shotgun blast to the face

Shooting Safety Rules
KNOW YOUR SAFE ZONE OF FIRE AND STICK TO IT. Your safe zone-of-fire is that area or direction in which you can safely fire a shot. It is "down range" at a shooting facility. In the field it is that mental image you draw in your mind with every step you take. BE SURE YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR COMPANIONS ARE AT ALL TIMES. Never swing your gun or bow out of your safe zone-of-fire. Know the safe carries when there are persons to your sides, in front of, or behind you. IF IN DOUBT, NEVER TAKE A SHOT. When hunting, wear daylight fluorescent orange so you can be seen from a distance or in heavy cover.

"Maybe it's a good thing Dick "had other priorities" during Vietnam. Imagine how much damage to his own platoon he could have done with an M16 and a 30 round clip?"

Hey, You don't know me but I have something to say anyhow about this matter. I'm sorry this all happened, but why is everybody still talking about it. It's over, and done with!!! it was an accident!!! We need to keep our focus on what's important...
also, I read some other posts as well. just wanted to say, you are a good writer!

Thank you for pointing out that I needed to include the date on my posts! I wrote that last week, it IS old news now!

Please understand one of the reasons this triggered negative reactions from many of us: We are tired of the "kingdom" of the administration and how the rules are applied differently to them than they are to the rest of Americans. Yes, it was an accident... but in regular hunting accidents with normal Americans, law enforcement would be allowed to determine if alcohol was involved. That is just ONE example of how this situation was treated "special" because of Cheney's identity.

I also personally was irritated because my own family does not have insurance and we go without medical, dental, and vision care as a result. But this man has his own medical team which follows him around? Justify that for me, please?

And I haven't quite processed how I feel about how Bush, Cheney, et al., sent my brother to his death in Iraq... while they found their excuses to stay out of Viet Nam... and then Cheney finally has the "worst moment in his life" when he has a hunting accident. I know that doesn't make sense (as to why it bothers me), I don't understand it myself. But it does...

Thank you SO much for your compliment on my writing. It feels like "ranting" sometimes but it helps me process! I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment! I hope you come back!

Bush did not "send" your brother to his death. Your brother chose to join the Marines, and he knew well enough that he might have to risk his life in fighting for our country. He may have not joined at the time the war in Iraq was going, but like I said, he knew there would be risks. He knew there would be hard times. He knew there could be death. I am not saying it was his fault he is dead now. It is NOT his fault, neither is it the presidents fault. But rather it is the terrorist's fault that shot him. The terrorist was the one that pulled the trigger, not Bush. That is why your brother went over there, because he wanted to kill the terrorist before the terrorist could kill anymore people. He made a very courageous decision!
Believe what you will, and I will believe what I will. I cannot say that I love your brother as much as you do, I can't say I am as proud of him as you can, but I can say that I appreciate him beyond all measure, for going there instead of me. My heart can't tell him "thank you" enough. I'm praying for you and your mother and family. The Lord can comfort in time of sorrow, need, or pain.
Please listen to this song; it's one of my favorites. I'll be honest with you, I cry when I hear this song. Click below. http://www.stinalisa.com/AlreadyThere.html

My brother joined the Marines to PROTECT our country and our freedoms, not to be used in a personal vendetta or for financial gain. If my brother had been killed in Afghanistan, then I would undertand... that would make sense! That is where we SHOULD be focusing our attention... NOT Iraq. We weren't having problems with Iraqi insurgents (or terrorists) BEFORE we invaded their country!

The song you sent me is beautiful. But do you understand that Lonestar is only writing a song? That however beautiful it is, it is still an item written for monetary purposes as an item to sell?

Read this poem... it was written by another sister like me... and you will never hear it on the radio... she won't make a dime from it... it may not be a popular Top 10 Hit... is only the tears weeping from her heart...

*CARLY'S POEM*
A Nation Rocked to sleep

Have you ever heard the sound of a mother screaming for her son?
The torrential rains of a mother's weeping will never be done.
They call him a hero, you should be glad that he's one, but...
Have you ever heard the sound of a mother screaming for her son?

Have you ever heard the sound of a father holding back his cries?
He must be brave because his boy died for another man's lies.
The only grief he allows himself are long, deep sighs.
Have you ever heard the sound of a father holding back his cries?

Have you ever heard the sound of taps played at your brother's grave?
They say that he died so that the flag will continue to wave.
But I believe he died because they had oil to save...
Have you ever heard the sound of taps played at your brother's grave?

Have you ever heard the sound of a nation being rocked to sleep?
The leaders want to keep you numb so the pain won't be so deep.
But if we the people let them continue another mother will weep...
Have you ever heard the sound of a nation being rocked to sleep?
=============

Dear girl,
Until you witness someone receiving the KIA notification, until you hear their piercing screams that will NEVER leave your memory... you can never truly understand that going to war is more than a patriotic duty and a waving flag and a popular country song... it is so much more than that.

Posted by Hummergirl... I moved it to this thread so it would fit the topic...

"It is I that should admire you. What worse thing could ever happen, than to have a BROTHER killed in war!
Though I respectfully agree with you in some areas, there is one I must question. If the war in Iraq isn't related to Ben Laden and 9/11, then what is?
You take my words wrongly in one matter. I never said your honorable brother was there to "chase" Ben Laden and his Terrorists, but if he wasn't there to kill "freedom haters" like Ben Laden himself, then why was he there?
Though I have never met your brother in person, (obviously) I am much honored to know his name. Though I do not know him personally, I feel very proud of him.
I must ask you a favor. Please, do not associate me with the "current administration".
What you said in the last part of your first comment is true about the administration. That is why I wish not to be them. If you fear I am "fed" by them, please point out how I can "untie" myself from they're knots.
If Americans, like your brave brother, do not stand up to terrorism and its followers, then who will? Just think, if your brother hadn't been in Iraq, some terrorists wouldn't have been stopped, some innocent little child might have not had that great privilege of meeting your brother face to face and realizing he was there to help them. That little child may have thought Americans were infidels before, but your brother was there to show him the truth that HE was there to take away their cruel leader Sudan Hussein and fight terror. I am personally very, very grateful Captain Alan Blake Row was there, instead of me.
You know a lot. I am not surprised you know more than me. I am very grateful for you commenting, for I have learned some things that I didn't know before by reading your comments.
What do you think will happen if we do not send those in uniform, like your Marine brother, to protect those they love back home, to kill Laden? I know...They will continue to terrorize our soil, they will continue to develop themselves into more strength, until we are made their footstools. Which would you rather be, the torn apart country of Israel or Iraq, where terror lurks, or in a free nation of brave people like your heroic brother.
If we press on in the Fight together, Lord knows, we both want this to end, and then we will conquer.
God Bless you for your courageous efforts. May He comfort you now!

P.s. You should be the world's next "great author". You write in such a profound way. I've often thought about being a writer, but I don't think anyone would be interested in reading my books."

Let me share some of my links (some of it is my writing, others are what I've found). I think that it should answer many of your questions... but you will still have questions, I know... SO DO WE!! They are not in any particular order...
